Designing A
Website
The criteria
that we have just discussed (overleaf) should be further translated as follows:
Light
Programming for Quick Click-Open Response : The website is written in
standard html language deploying straight forward programming commands that make each
webpage relatively light and may click-open in seconds. Images are optimally compressed to
a "light" size while retaining visual quality. It is best to avoid animations
that require a considerable downloading time and a correspondence programme installed in
the viewer's computer. In addition, the html language is most commonly known which
enable future alterations be handled by any web-designer that you wish to appoint.
Still
Photos Of The Factory/Products : Again the same balacing process between
optimum compression and good visual quality. We highly recommend the use of digital camera
with a minimum 1.5 million pixel capability. Scanned images of photos may be used but they
are not as good as those taken with the digital camera.
Number
Of Pages : 10 pages would normally suffice to space a properly prepared
presentation. A typical website may consist of 1 homepage (frontpage), 1 - 3
pages on products, 1 - 2 pages on sale/marketing, 1 page for company profile, and 1 page
to hold guest book. More pages may only be required if the products are quite numerous.
Key Words : are not only
essential they are crucial. Sufficient attention should be given to think of all possible
key words that may be used by your target audience to search for companies in your line of
business. For instance a garment manufacturer would be searched with the following
relevant words: garment, manufacturer, distributor, clothing, exporter, fashion, t-shirts,
shirt, pants, jeans, denim, customer label, etc.
Time
Needed To Make A Website : Approximately 10 days. It could be faster if
photographs and company logo are already available. We strongly believe however that ample
time should be given to prepare a good presentation. And the preparation needs
sufficient guidance from you as head of business.
Up-loading
: A website is not yet alive and in operation unless it has been up-loaded to a
hosting computer. The hosting computer stays connected to a local area (internet) network
non-stop 24-hour a day, thereby allowing surfers to visit every website that is hosted in
the computer at all time. Up-loading is entirely your web-maker's responsibility as it
could be quite technical. In any case, your web-maker will have to ensure the up-loaded
website is operating error-free.
Hosting : As a web-owner, you can have your
own "host computer" if your website is quite large and someone in your
organization is technically versed to handle it. A 10-page website similar to the one we
outline earlier should not require more than 1.5Mb disk space, whereas a hosting company
typically offer a minimum disk-space package of 10Mb going up to 100Mb or 200Mb. Due to
competition, disk-space rental is not expensive and payable monthly. There are hosting
companies which provides disk-space free in exchange for pop-up advertisement. Or you may
pay them a few dollars a month in lieu of the pop-up. We would recommend to you to first
try out the free disk-space services. Some of them are very reliable, well known hosting
and provide strong technical supports.
Domain
& Sub-Domain Name: There is a dot.com company registrar which
handle the "sale and purchase" of dot.com (domain) names. To our knowledge, P.T.
Media Antar Nusa (website: http://www.medannic.com)
is currently the company in Indonesia which handles any "sale & purchase"
and the registration. We put the quote-&-unquote (double comma) sign on the words sale
& purchase because one does not really buy but rather one "leases" a name by
paying the right-to-use-it fee annually. You got the right to use it as long as you keep
renewing and paying the annual fee on time through the registrar. The current
"purchase" fee per dot.com is Rp125,000 p.a. You may choose any name so long as
it has not been used by others and it conforms to certain technical rules. If you are to
acquire the same dot.com through the U.S. based registrar (http://www.register.com), the
procedure is the same but register.com will charge you US$70 for 2 years payable in
advance. Sub-domain name is quite different from a domain name. A
sub-domain is created when a website is up-loaded to a host computer. For instance, if
your website is to be up-loaded and eventually hosted with Hypermart. Hypermart's domain
name or address in the world wide world (www) is http://www.hypermart.net/. Your website is literally attached
to the Hypermart's domain address and therefore a link or a sub-domain is created. If your
user name (ID) with Hypermart is say Bandung Garment, your address (which is a sub-domain)
will typically be http://bandung-garment.hypermart.net/. It is a rather long name
but it's free.
Website Maintainance
: Each and every electronic semiconductor component which together makes up an
electronic equipment like a computer has its own life cycle. So these so called hardwares
cannot last forever. If one tiny component breaks down, the equipment will not work until
that tiny one is replaced. That's why a computer hosting company must have a strong
maintenance programme and back-up system. Your website is not part of the hardware. It is
entirely written in computer command language understood by computer, known as software.
The software does not really need any maintenance. Once your website is up-loaded
(installed) into the host computer, it will run forever and error free, unless the
computer system and/or memory breaks down and the software of your website is compromised.
Then of course the website has to be re-uploaded (re-installed). Fortunately, such a thing
does rarely occur and when it does, the back-up system of your reliable computer hosting
company will simply take over. Historically, website re-uploads occurred due to amendment
initiated by web-owners. So don't worry about website maintainance but do worry about
selecting a reliable computer hosting computer.
Up to this point, your website is alive and
running. But your present has to be made known in the www by listing your website to
directories of major search engine companies. For more details, please turn to the
